In the 2008 GOP primary for county/district attorney, a cover-up was exposed involving the husband of Grubbs’ prosecutor, Cindy Hellstern, in an incident dating back to 2006, when Cindy was running for court at law No. 2 (as a Democrat.)

Grubbs, a Republican, met with lawyers and Ellis County Sheriff’s Office officials in 2006 after Don Hellstern had been alleged by an out-of-town truck driver of masturbating on the side of I-45 in Palmer.

There was no story; The incident went from “indecent exposure” to “disorderly conduct” literally overnight.

The Ellis County Press exposed this blatant cover-up in a series of articles and editorials that soon cemented the 2008 primary election season as one of the nastiest ever.
